Rongorongo is the glyph based writing system used by the ancient Rapa Nui inhabitants of Easter Island. To date the writing system is yet to be deciphered, although it is heavily documented. Rongorongo appears to be a boustrophedon, a type of writing script that is bi-directional. Rather than being read left to right, or right to left, lines of Rongorongo alternate. No other native writing system developed in Polynesia, which makes the case of Rongorongo, not to mention the other mysteries of Easter Island, all the more intriguing.
